It's a hilarious way to start out the movie. Of course we open on Joel (Rudd) and Molly (Poehler) recounting their love story to a couple of friends, over dinner. It's hard to keep the spoofing fresh, but it isn't hard for Rudd and Poehler to carry the dull parts. They're just so darned amiable that it's hard not to just sit there and smile. They're the constant in an otherwise turbulent movie. Whenever 'They Came Together' fails to achieve its goal of pointing out the joke of rom-coms, which are already a joke in and of themselves, it falls back on the shoulders of an infinitely likable duo of Paul Rudd and Amy Poehler. Some of them hit, others miss, and at times the movie wades back into the very clichés it's spending so much time pointing at and laughing. At times, the desire to point out the world of rom-com flaws comes dangerously close to a movie that would be better titled 'Not Another Rom-Com Movie.' Writers Michael Showalter and David Wain throw out a barrage of spoof jokes. Sometimes it perfectly encapsulates the unbelievable romantic mush so many rom-coms wade through, and other times it loses itself in its parody-like behavior. Special guest appearance by my cat Blackjack!įriend who wrote a better review than me: Jeremiah Dollins.'They Came Together' is all about skewering the romantic comedy status quo. Nonetheless, if your boyfriend hates rom-coms and you adore them, you both might get a kick out of this very silly – also uncomfortably sexy, at times – and inventive spoof.īy the way, if you want to watch me open these presents and a few others – we always spend too much on one another – you can check that out right here. It's perfect.Īll the formulaic horseshit is exactly the point, but it comes from a place of love and admiration, not derision of the genre. Goofy montages, one-dimensional characters, brutally obvious plot directions, eye-rolling canned lines, a cut to Norah Jones actually performing a song in the middle of the movie. (Also, obviously the story is a take on Nora Ephron’s You’ve Got Mail.) Wain called it "a deliberately terrible romantic comedy" and you can feel just how terrible he wished to make it. Showalter and Wain owe a bit to legends like Zucker/Abrahams/Zucker with the lightning pace of the humor and deadpan dialogue, and that's a style I love. But most are! I probably laughed more at this film than anything I've watched in months. I myself am a very stupid person so I deeply connected with this utterly ridiculous movie that did not go 15 seconds without a joke. How do they come back together?Įvery possible cliché and trope of rom-coms comes out with full force in this relentless parody of the beloved genre. Joel runs back to Tiffany and Molly dates her banker Eggbert (Ed Helms). Bad vibes turn good quickly, but life pulls them apart. In fact, their friends Bob (Jason Mantzoukas) and Brenda (Melanie Lynskey) were going to set them up. It's a random Halloween party where Joel and Molly finally meet, Joel convinced by his younger brother Jake (Max Greenfield) and Molly by coworker Wanda (Teyonah Parris). But when Joel catches his girlfriend Tiffany Amber Thigpen (Cobie Smulders) cheating on him with work rival Trevor (Michael Ian Black) – whose boss Roland (Christopher Meloni) gives him the big account to run – his perfect world is shattered. Joel and Molly hear from their friends about all the pros and cons of relationships and marriage, as they each represent very specific viewpoints and explain them clearly. Of course this is in New York, officially the third character in the story, playing itself. Out to dinner with unhappy married couple Kyle (Bill Hader) and Karen (Ellie Kemper), very happily coupled Joel (Paul Rudd) and Molly (Amy Poehler) tell the story of their relationship: one a clumsy single girl running a quirky candy shop and one a committed executive at a big bad candy conglomerate down the block. Both lovers and haters of romantic comedies will find plenty to enjoy in this David Wain feature co-written by Michael Showalter. Finally eight years later I got to check it out, and while it's messy and oftentimes aimless, the humor is on point and rarely unfunny. Tonight's is the rom-com spoof They Came Together, long on my watchlist after I remember reading about this comedy while I was in jail in the Summer of 2014. The second of my two Blu-ray gifts from a friend seven months ago, it's Christmas in July so I had little excuse not to rack 'em up and thank him for the fine movies. ☆ "So, if there was a movie about your relationship, it would probably start with aerial shots of the Manhattan skyline."☆ When selecting a clip in Live, the first instrument track in Liquid Rhythm wouldn’t be selected by default instead it would have the ‘focused region’ indicator, with some other track selected.BeatForm Mute toggle on Medium and Weak wouldn’t toggle.Changing the colour of multiple tracks and pressing undo wouldn’t revert the colour changes.Walkthrough would sometimes crash when attempting to access a part of the Liquid Rhythm window that was not visible.Performance improvements when selecting regions in the arranger. Probably more from his own sense of drive and desire to succeed, Dave found himself under pressure to produce another hit game. That game was none other than the illustrious Missile Command, a huge hit for Atari, eventually selling over 14,000 upright units. It was named after Theurer (rather perversely), as he was the only designer up to that point to have his first game released – something normally unheard of, as most programmers would stumble at their first attempt. So much so that Atari’s arcade division had an unwritten rule known as Theurer’s Law, which stated that “No designer gets his/her first game published”. Now highly respected internally at the company, he had very quickly been catapulted to Superstar Programmer status. Its creator, Dave Theurer had just finished up Missile Command, having previously worked on Atari’s Four Player Soccer game. This week, I wanted to take a more detailed look at how the game was made. Nothing like it had been seen before, and arguably, nothing has come close since.Īs Atari’s first full colour vector game, Tempest not only broke new technical ground, reinforcing Atari’s position at the top of the arcade development scene, but also threw something completely new at the playing public. More than any other classic arcade game, Tempest hit the arcade scene like a juggernaut. It’s a brave man who tries to criticize Atari’s seminal groundbreaking game Tempest. He didn’t care.Īdditionally, his legs got big, strong and defined. Although, his overall basketball skills weren’t the greatest. He’s not a tall guy as far as basketball players go. Next thing we knew, he was dunking a basketball. Other times he’d take a run and see how high he could reach on a wall outside his house. Sometimes he’d jump straight up from a standing position. What he really wanted to do was be able to dunk the basketball. When I was a kid a friend of mine wanted to get good at basketball. This Exercise Has Ancient Origins (Sort Of) I found a good video demo of how to do the jumping knee tuck at Mens Health online. Pretty easy right? Now do it a bunch of times in a row. This will reduce the stress on your joints. Then jump up high while tucking your knees up towards your chest.Īs you come back down try to land with your knees bent. You can start with your hands raised slightly up in front of you if you like. This one movement is really the whole package for lower body and core conditioning. If your looking to get active or improve your current physical fitness regimen, the jumping knee tuck is also great for improving coordination, balance and agility. It feels like the best time to exercise… or cry. You’ll probably feel it if you’re in good shape as well. If you haven’t exercised in a while you’re going to feel this one. This exercise is also a great cardiovascular workout. Getting rid of body fat is probably a primary reason this move is also so popular. It will also strengthen and tighten your abs. Jumping knee tucks will help strengthen and tone your legs, hips and behind. But, there is no denying the benefits which is why I keep doing it. This is another one of those exercises I’m not crazy about. It is a great all around physical fitness movement. If I had to guess, I’d say incorporating the knee tuck jumps into my workout played a huge part in reducing fat around my gut and body shape generally. Pairing the two exercises together is a killer workout. I’ll discuss it specifically another time.įor now you can take my word on this. There’s been numerous things written about it. I feel like I’m still learning about HIIT all the time. The pairing of the two exercises together is similar to what I’ve heard about High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT). These secretly strengthen your calves as well.) That means I’ll do a set of shoulder presses and then go straight into knee tuck jumps. Sometimes I like to pair knee tuck jumps with another weight lifting exercise like shoulder presses. Knee Tuck Jumps Are A Great Companion Exercise Also, mixing it in is a good exercise habit to develop. You can mix this one in between push ups and a plank variation and that will give you a great warm up routine. I’ll mix it in with other warm up exercises, doing each for thirty second increments. This is another great exercise that I like to include with my warm up. Another great movement that works and shapes the whole body is knee tuck jumps. In this workout, each tabata will alternate between 2 exercises and each exercise will be done for 4 sets.I mentioned in another post how doing burpees are great because they work your whole body. Tabata is a high intensity interval training method specifically using intervals of 20 seconds of work followed by 20 seconds of rest for 8 sets. It is encouraged that you modify each exercise to a version that is best for you. After completing the workout perform a cool-down that allows your heart rate to gradually slow down to a normal rate. Perform each exercise in the warm-up for 45 seconds. Perform a warm-up that consists of an activity that gradually increases your heart rate and moves your joints through a moderate to large range of motion. Find a space that is clear in front, behind, and to each side of you to avoid injury. (maybe you can convince me something else is better!) What are you using for notes app on your Mac? PS - Yep, I know I can run OneNote in Parallels (and did for a long while!), but the constantly running a heavy virtual machine for only a note-taking app has made it not worth it. So while I love my Mac, I sorta wish I had a PC back for a perfectly integrated OneNote for faster, intuitive note-taking that just works. The more keyboard friendly, the more likely my mile-a-minute brain will actually jot it down in my notes system, which keeps me more focused on working than trying to remember. Maybe it’s just me, but the first one is way more intuitive. In OneNote, you type an asterisk (*) and then just hit space.Bullets and quick notes go together like tabasco ‘n eggs. Now I have a calculator app open all the time too. OneNote had become my quick shopping notebook: I was constantly pricing out tech equipment or software apps (okay, I need 3 users for our team, at $35 a month, plus a fee…), and quick addition plus quick tables makes cost comparison charts faster than Bruce Lee in an ice factory. Once you get used to the idea that you can type 3218+340= and the answer automagically appears… you start getting frustrated with every other text editor on the planet that isn’t as smart. Tables aren’t a special graphical feature in OneNote, they’re part of the normal thought flow: as easy as typing a sentence. No need to define how many rows you want in advance, shading preferences, or spacing details. You type a word, hit TAB, and you’re already in column two. To create a table in OneNote, you press TAB. OneNote still has these features that I haven’t found elsewhere: Quickest Tables Ever It’s about the tiniest keyboard shortcuts or convenience options that make recording that note just a little bit more friction-free. And of course there’s the Mac Notes app itself-now with less faux torn paper than ever (thanks Mavericks!)īut for me, keeping organized in a Notes app is more than the essentials of a instant-save, searchable and sync-able notebook (though all of those are musts). I regularly have my Mac friends point me towards Evernote or trendier or even nerdier options. Sure, I know there are Mac apps designed to catch those notes and links and information clutter that pile up. Today is my two year anniversary switching from a corporate Dell to the Macbook Pro, and my wrists are still very much enjoying their luxury aluminum resting places. |
